Post-operative instructions following trigger finger (flexor tendon pulley) release
First 48 Hours
• Keep hand elevated above heart level to minimize swelling and throbbing.
• A small bulky dressing or band-aid will be over the palm — keep dry for 48 hours.
• Mild soreness at the incision is expected. Take medications as directed.
Wound Care
• After 48 hours, dressings may be reduced to a simple band-aid.
• Clean the incision with soap and water gently once daily after day 2.
• Sutures dissolve or are removed at 10–14 days.
Finger Motion
• Begin moving the finger immediately after surgery — active range-of-motion is encouraged.
• Full motion returns gradually over 2–6 weeks.
• If stiffness persists beyond 4–6 weeks, hand therapy may be recommended.
Activity
• Light activity (typing, writing): 2–3 days.
• Gripping and lifting: 2–3 weeks as tolerated.
• Full activity: 3–4 weeks.
Expectations
• The triggering sensation resolves immediately for most patients.
• Mild stiffness and soreness in the palm may persist for 4–8 weeks.
• The small palm scar fades well over 3–6 months.
