Breast Reduction
Post-operative instructions following reduction mammaplasty
Drains
• Drains, if placed, are emptied twice daily. Record output in your log sheet.
• Drain removal typically occurs at 1–3 days post-op when output is minimal.
Bra & Support
• Wear your surgical bra continuously for the first 2–4 weeks (remove only to shower).
• A supportive sports bra without underwire follows for the next 4 weeks.
• Avoid ill-fitting bras — proper support reduces tension on incisions and improves healing.
Activity
• Rest the first 48–72 hours. Short walks are encouraged to prevent clots.
• No lifting over 10 lbs for 4 weeks.
• Return to desk work: typically 1–2 weeks.
• Full activity: cleared at 6 weeks.
Expectations
• Swelling after breast reduction can persist for several months — your final size may not be apparent until 3–6 months post-op. If there are any concerns they are usually at the T point junction of your closure under your breast, and these will usually be managed by local wound care.
• Nipple sensation changes are common and usually temporary.
• Many patients experience significant relief of neck, back, and shoulder pain within the first few weeks.
