Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck)

Post-operative instructions following full or mini abdominoplasty

First 72 Hours

• Rest in a flexed hip position (reclined or pillow under knees) to reduce tension on the incision.

• Do not stand fully upright for the first 5–7 days. Walk slightly hunched forward.

• Your drains and abdominal binder will be in place — do not remove without instruction.

• Constipation is common from anesthesia and pain medications. Use stool softeners proactively.

Drain Management

• Empty drains at least twice daily (morning and night). Record output in your log.

• Strip drains before emptying to keep them patent.

• Drains are removed when each side produces less than 30mL per 24-hour period.

• Most drains are out by day 7–14.

Compression Garment

• Wear your abdominal binder or compression garment 24 hours a day for 6 weeks (remove only to shower).

• Compression reduces swelling, supports the repair, and improves your result.

• After 6 weeks, you may transition to Spanx-style shapewear during the day.

Activity Restrictions

• No lifting over 10 lbs for 6 weeks.

• No core exercises, crunches, or sit-ups for 8–12 weeks.

• Short walks: begin day 1. Gradually increase distance each day.

• Return to desk work: 2–3 weeks.

• Full exercise clearance: 8–12 weeks depending on procedure.

Swelling

• Swelling after abdominoplasty is significant and can last 3–6 months.

• Your abdomen will feel tight and numb — sensation gradually returns over months.

• Lymphatic massage is strongly recommended starting 2–3 weeks post-op to reduce swelling.

Your belly button is an   incision site as well. Keep it clean and dry. Report any unusual discharge,   odor, or darkening of the surrounding skin.
