Post-operative instructions following ganglion cyst removal
First Week
• Keep the hand elevated above heart level for the first 48–72 hours.
• A wrist splint or bulky dressing will be applied — keep it clean and dry.
• Mild swelling and soreness at the excision site are expected.
Wound Care
• Dressings are changed at your first post-op visit (typically 5–7 days).
• Sutures are removed at 10–14 days.
• After suture removal, clean the incision with soap and water once daily.
• The area may feel firm and tender for 4–8 weeks as internal healing occurs.
Wrist Motion & Activity
• Begin gentle wrist range-of-motion after your dressing is removed.
• Light activity: 2–3 weeks.
• Full activity and lifting: 4–6 weeks.
• Grip strength returns gradually over 4–8 weeks.
Recurrence
• Ganglion cysts can recur even after surgical excision — the recurrence rate is approximately 5–10% after surgery.
• Notify our office if you notice a new lump forming in the same area.
Most patients notice immediate relief of pressure symptoms after excision. Full resolution of any aching or weakness takes 4–8 weeks.
